The Friends of Waterford Regional Hospital was established to improve patient comfort through direct contact between friends and patients. The Friends operate the Hospital Library and have undertaken many fundraising initiatives to assist with the purchase of medical equipment.

A group comprising members of the Friends came together to produce a number of tapestries for display in the hospital. A large, four-panelled tapestry work entitled The River Story depicting the history of Waterford was completed by the group over a period of two years, under the direction of the Arts Co-ordinator. It now hangs in the entrance area of the hospital.

Sanctuary Corner is a quiet and restful place which encourages visitors to take ‘time out’ while in the hospital. The corner, which has been created by the Friends of Waterford Regional Hospital in collaboration with the Waterford Healing Arts Trust features four tapestries depicting the four seasons made by the Friends Tapestry Group. In 2002, the group began work on a series of tapestries which will go on display in the South Eastern Health Board clinics on the Cork Road.
