Sky 1-32 by Michael Durand
The Haematology and Oncology Ward of Waterford Regional Hospital has recently been renovated and the Day Ward has been expanded.  Waterford artist Michael Durand was commissioned to produce a series of photographic works based on images of the sky, to give the ward a new and coherent look.

According to the artist, “since 2000 I have been photographing the sky from the window of airplanes. The images take on an abstract almost painterly quality allowing the viewer the room to construct their own thoughts and feelings on what they are looking at. Each piece is titled after the destination to which I was travelling”.

Michael’s images can be viewed in the corridors, bays and single rooms of Medical 4. Some are presented as back-lit ceiling-based images and others are wall-mounted pieces.
The central piece is a large photographic image at the Nurse’s Station.  We hope that these images will help patients, staff and visitors in the ward to travel to another place in their mind’s eye.

Opportunities

Artist in residence opportunity
The Waterford Healing Arts Trust, in partnership with Squashy Couch Youth Café, wishes to engage an artist in residence to deliver a participatory art project to increase the self esteem and confidence of young people using the Squashy Couch facility, and to help build the capacity of staff and volunteers to use arts as a tool for positive health promotion.

This project will roll out in two phases: The first phase will be an intensive week-long residency in June 2008.  The second phase will take the form of a weekly programme from September 2008 to May 2009.
For further information, contact the Waterford Healing Arts Trust at 051 842664 or e-mail WHAT@hse.ie. The deadline date for submissions is 11th April 2008.

Internship opportunity for arts graduate
The Trust is custodian of over 200 original artworks on display in Waterford Regional Hospital, and is currently seeking ways of making this resource more accessible to the patients, staff and visitors in the hospital. The Waterford Healing Arts Trust wishes to engage a student or recent graduate to mediate aspects of this Art collection through a three month internship. An informed interest in Contemporary Art Practice and clear and accessible writing skills are essential.

For further information, contact the Waterford Healing Arts Trust at 051 842664 or e-mail WHAT@hse.ie. The deadline date for submissions is 30th April 2008.

Reproductions versus Originals

Visual Art Workshops with Brigid Teehan
Tuesday 22nd April – 5.00 pm – 7.00pm
Saturday 26th April – 10.00am – 12.00pm
Thursday 1st May – 5.00pm – 7.00pm
During this exciting programme of workshops, participants will use a number of artistic techniques including collage, photomontage and paper weaving, to create an original artwork in response to the Doing the Rounds exhibition or to a printed reproduction hanging in the Outpatients corridor. The original artwork created will replace the reproductions in the Outpatients corridor for one month. At the end of this period, staff from the Outpatients Department will be asked which they prefer; reproductions or original artworks?

Commitment to attend is required for all workshops. The workshops take place in the Main Classroom of the Centre of Nurse Education.

Respond
A visual evaluation of the Doing the Rounds exhibition by staff from Waterford Regional Hospital.
Each department in WRH will receive an art pack including art materials, catalogues, questionnaires and postcards during the exhibition period. The post cards will be blank on one side with clear instructions on the other. The instructions will encourage and motivate hospital staff members to creatively respond to the exhibition. The completed visual responses will be compiled together to form an artwork. This artwork will be a collaborative visual evaluation of the exhibition.

Booking is essential for the tours, talks and workshops. For more information please contact the WHAT office at 051-842664 or e-mail WHAT@hse.ie.
