Bringing Culture Night to UHW

Healing Sounds Outdoors, 17 Sept

Waterford Healing Arts Trust (WHAT) will celebrate Culture Night 2021 by bringing live music to the grounds of University Hospital Waterford (UHW) on Friday 17 September between 6pm and 7.30pm.  This special acoustic session will be provided by WHAT’s Healing Sounds team of musicians Liam Merriman, Eoin O Meachair, Alan Browne, Michelle Haberlin and Liam Kavanagh.

Culture Night is a national celebration of arts, heritage and culture which sees venues and public spaces all over Ireland presenting free events to encourage more people to engage with the arts.  Claire Meaney, Director of Waterford Healing Arts Trust, explains the organisation’s involvement: “Culture Night is a fantastic initiative, but patients and staff on duty at the hospital miss out because they can’t access all the free events on offer around Waterford and further afield.  The obvious solution from our point of view is to bring Culture Night to the hospital, via our Healing Sounds programme.  Previously we have brought live music on to the wards for Culture Night.  Even though we cannot be on the wards at the moment due to the pandemic, our musicians, who are all trained to work in healthcare settings, can still bring their beautiful music to a number of locations around the grounds of the hospital where they are visible to many wards.  We have been doing these sessions all through the summer and have had fantastic feedback from patients and staff.  They tell us the music helps to lift their spirits and brings a little normality back to their lives.  Culture Night has become a very special event in our calendar year, so we’re really looking forward to Friday 17 September”.
