The goal of creating an art collection for the hospital has been central to the work of the Waterford Healing Arts Trust since its inception. The selection process was guided in the early years of the Trust by a policy of collecting works by artists associated with the South East of Ireland. This was accomplished through commissions, donations and purchases, some of which were assisted by the Arts Council's Joint Purchase Scheme. Works on loan from the Arts Council, the Office of Public Works and private collections are also displayed alongside the Collection. The Trust has also been the recipient of generous donations of works from artists and benefactors including the Irish Contemporary Arts Society.

The collection includes works by established Irish artists, such as Tom Molloy, Pauline Bewick, Paul Mosse, Amelia Stein, Carmel Mooney and Janet Mullarney, alongside those of emerging artists. In 2007, extracts of the collection went of tour for the first time in an exhibition entitled Doing the Rounds. The exhibition, which was funded by the Arts Council’s Touring Experiement, toured to Galway University Hospitals, the Mater Hospital and St. James’s Hospital, Dublin, and Naas General Hospital.
