Ceoltas Ceoltoiri Eireann perform as part of the Healing Sounds programme

Based on research that music is a valuable tool in reducing anxiety,  fostering memories and cultural attachments, WHAT provides music experiences throughout Waterford Regional Hospital and healthcare environments in Waterford.

This includes Healing Sounds, WHAT’s monthly programme of live music performances, a library of music CD's available to Waterford Regional Hospital staff for playing in clinical spaces, and a programme of participatory Music in Mental Health and Community Settings in Waterford.

The latter grew from a European Exchange Programme which took place in 2006 whereby the Waterford Healing Arts Trust partnered with Musique et Santė (France) and ARTS for HEALTH (UK) to share experience in the field of music in hospitals. Three professional musicians from each participating country played music for and with patients through a series of residencies in hospitals and healthcare environments in Waterford, England and France. The Irish and English musicians were mentored by the Musique et Santė musicians who have built up extensive experience in this field of work.

The Waterford Healing Arts Trust acknowledges the support of The Arts Council and Music Network through the Music Capital Scheme 2008.
