WHAT regularly works in partnership with the HSE Health Promotion Department on communicating health messages through engagement with the arts.
In 2003, Artist Brigid Teehan attached the wishes of staff, patients and visitors to WRH to 300 white balloons which were released at noon on World Mental Health Day. The project recognised that the physical release of feelings is the mind and body’s way of healing, and as such, a central part of everybody’s mental health.
In 2004, WHAT invited staff, patients and visitors to make a promise to their heart as part of a Heart Awareness Day.
In 2005, WHAT, in partnership with the Health Promotion Department and the Waterford Substance Misuse Team, commissioned artist Bernie Leahy to produce an artwork that invited people to reflect on their relationship with alcohol.
People can contribute to this artwork by sending a letter which tells how alcohol has affected your life. Contact WHAT to find out more.
In 2008, WHAT partnered with Squashy Couch Youth Café, a health information service for young people in Waterford City, on a participatory art project that addresses young peoples emotional health issues.
In 2008, WHAT in partnership with the Oncology/ Haemotology Services of WRH and the HSE Health Promotion Unit, launched My Breast Friend, a creative project that aimed to raise awareness of Breast Health.
