Salience: the fact of being important to or connected with what is happening or being discussed.

Introducing: Dr Ryan Flavin! Ryan is a self-taught artist from Tramore, Co. Waterford, and currently works as a psychiatry doctor at University Hospital Waterford. He previously worked as a doctor in Australia, and travelled extensively throughout South America before returning to Ireland. Ryan began painting three years ago, although he has had an interest in art for a long time.  Much of his work draws on time spent in the Amazon rainforest, and exposure to plant-based medicinal traditions and their cultural settings. These experiences emerge within his paintings as abstract, dream-like spaces and symbolic forms.

Ryan is particularly drawn to pointillism, and has been developing a personal approach that incorporates elements of both abstraction and pointillism. The exhibition is on show until 11 March 2026.

The Staff Art Wall is an initiative of Waterford Healing Arts which aims to celebrate the creativity of staff working at UHW by providing an opportunity to display their work at the hospital. If you work at UHW and would like to exhibit your art on the Staff Art Wall, please contact: (051) 842664 or info@realta.ie
